Cardiff
Good news for Cardiff homes
Until recently, fitting air-to-air air conditioning in Wales often meant applying for planning permission. Since 1 June 2026, the Welsh rules have changed, and many homes can now have a system that heats and cools without a planning application, as long as the size and position rules are met.
Cardiff's long Victorian terraces in Roath, Canton and Cathays usually have a rear wall or yard that's ideal for the outdoor unit. Apartments in Cardiff Bay are a bit different, as you'll need your building's permission first, but they're very doable.
- New Welsh rules
Air-to-air heat pumps are now covered by permitted development in Wales. We check your address.
- Terraces with yards
Roath, Canton and Cathays homes are usually simple, one-day installs.
- Bay apartments
Balcony units, once the building management has agreed.

Air con in Cardiff: your questions
Still unsure? Call us on 0330 043 7869, 7 days a week.
Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Cardiff?
Often not any more. Since 1 June 2026, Welsh permitted development rules cover air-to-air heat pumps, provided the size and position rules are met. Listed buildings and conservation areas are still different, so we check your address.
How much does air conditioning cost in Cardiff?
Wall mounted systems start from £2,000 fully fitted, and two room systems from £3,800.
Can I fit air con in a Cardiff Bay apartment?
Usually, yes. The outdoor unit often goes on the balcony. You'll need permission from your building's management first.
Do you cover Penarth and Barry?
Yes. We install across Cardiff and into the Vale of Glamorgan.
Does it heat as well as cool?
Yes. Every system we fit is a heat pump, so it heats in winter and cools in summer.
