FAQs

Portable vs fitted: your questions

Still unsure? Call us on 0330 043 7869, 7 days a week.

Is a portable air conditioner as good as a fitted one?

No. Portable units are less powerful for their size, noisier and more expensive to run. Hot air from the exhaust hose and gaps around the window kit also let heat back in.

Are portable air conditioners expensive to run?

Yes, compared with a fitted system. A typical portable uses around 1 to 1.5kW, about 26p to 39p an hour at the October 2026 price cap, which can be double a fitted split system.

Do I need a window for a portable air conditioner?

Yes. Portable units need to vent hot air outside through a hose, usually through a partly open window with a sealing kit.

Can I install a split air conditioner myself?

No. Connecting the refrigerant pipes of a split system must be done by an F-Gas certified engineer by law, even on pre-charged units.

When does a portable unit make sense?

If you rent and can't make changes, or you only need occasional cooling for a few days a year, a portable unit can be a short-term option.
